Staircase Hand Woven Jute Dhurrie

Hand Woven · Natural Jute · Flat Weave

Product Description

The Staircase Hand Woven Jute Dhurrie draws its name and its design from one of architecture's most enduring forms — the staircase. A pattern of ascending and descending stepped lines runs across the flat-woven surface, creating a bold, graphic rhythm that is both visually striking and rooted in the geometry of traditional Indian weaving.

Made entirely from 100% natural jute, this dhurrie is lightweight, breathable, and built for everyday use. The flat weave construction makes it slim and easy to place anywhere in the home — living rooms, hallways, entryways, dining areas, or even covered outdoor spaces. Its natural earthy tones work quietly with almost any interior, adding texture and warmth without demanding attention.

The staircase is one of the oldest geometric forms in Indian craft. Step patterns appear in ancient temple carvings, in the borders of Mughal textiles, in the tile work of old havelis. They represent progression — each step a move forward, each line building on the one before it.

Our weavers translate this stepped geometric pattern directly on the loom, counting warp threads by touch and building the design row by row without any digital aid. The result carries the small imperfections that come from hand work — slight variations in line, subtle shifts in tension — that give the dhurrie its character and make every piece genuinely one of a kind.

At Srijan Art Rugs, we believe that the simplest patterns are often the most honest. The Staircase Dhurrie does not try to impress. It earns its place through craft, material, and the quiet confidence of good design.

Care Instructions

  • Shake and air regularly — take outdoors and shake gently to remove dust. Air in the shade, not in direct sunlight for extended periods.
  • Spot clean only — blot spills immediately with a dry cloth. Use a damp cloth with mild soap for stains. Always blot, never scrub.
  • Do not machine wash, soak, or steam clean. Jute fibres weaken and distort with excess water and heat.
  • Lay flat to dry if the rug gets damp — in a well-ventilated, shaded area. Never hang wet.
  • Use a non-slip rug pad underneath, especially on hard floors, to prevent movement and extend the dhurrie's life.
  • Rotate every few months to distribute wear evenly across the stepped pattern, particularly in high-traffic areas.
  • Store rolled — never folded — in a cool, dry, ventilated space away from moisture and pests.
