Nain Hand Knotted Woollen Rug
Hand Knotted · Pure Wool · Nain Tradition · Fine Weave
Product Description
The Nain Hand Knotted Woollen Rug is a masterwork of refined restraint. Inspired by the legendary rug-making tradition of Nain — a city in central Iran whose weavers are celebrated for producing some of the world's finest and most delicately detailed hand knotted rugs — this piece brings that same spirit of quiet excellence to the modern home.
Crafted entirely from premium hand-spun wool, the Nain rug is characterised by its exceptionally fine knotting density, its elegant ivory and soft blue-green palette, and the intricate curvilinear floral scrollwork that flows through the field and borders with effortless grace. This is not a rug that announces itself — it earns your attention slowly, revealing more detail the closer you look.
A Nain rug is not made in a day — or a week. It is the product of months of sustained, focused skill. That patience is visible in every square inch.

Design Story
"Nain does not shout. It whispers — and you lean in to listen."
Nain entered the world of fine rug-making relatively late — only in the early 20th century — but made up for lost time with extraordinary speed and ambition. Nain weavers, many of them former textile workers from the town's cotton weaving industry, brought a technical precision and a delicacy of line to rug-making that had rarely been seen before. Within decades, Nain rugs were considered among the finest produced anywhere in the world.
The hallmarks of the Nain style are unmistakable: a central medallion floating in a luminous ivory field, surrounded by densely scrolling arabesques and botanical vines that fill every corner without ever feeling crowded. The palette is characteristically cool and refined — ivory, pale blue, sage green, soft terracotta — colours that speak of contemplation rather than spectacle.
Our artisans at Srijan Art Rugs have studied this tradition closely, working from classical Nain compositions and tying each Persian knot by hand on a vertical loom. The process is slow, deliberate, and deeply meditative — much like the rug itself. When the weaving is complete, the rug is hand washed and hand clipped to bring the pattern into full definition.
To own a Nain rug is to own a piece of one of the great craft traditions of the 20th century — brought to life by hands that respect what that means.

Care Instructions
Vacuum Carefully
Use low suction only — no beater bar. The fine knot density of a Nain rug means fibres sit close together and can be disturbed by aggressive vacuuming. Always go with the pile direction.
Spot Clean Only
Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth. Use cold water sparingly for spot treatment — avoid soaking the pile. Never use harsh detergents on hand-spun wool, as they strip the natural lanolin.
No Machine Wash
Never machine wash, tumble dry, soak, or steam clean. The cotton foundation and hand-spun wool pile will both be permanently damaged by excess water, heat, or mechanical agitation.
Professional Clean Only
For deep cleaning, always use a specialist experienced with fine hand knotted wool rugs. Recommend professional cleaning every 2–3 years with careful regular maintenance in between.
Rotate Every 3 Months
Rotate 180° every 3 months to distribute light and foot traffic evenly. The pale Nain palette is particularly sensitive to uneven fading — regular rotation keeps the piece looking balanced and fresh.
Store with Care
Roll with pile inward around a clean tube. Wrap in breathable cotton cloth — never plastic. Store in a cool, dark, dry space away from sunlight, moisture, and pests.
