Feraghan Hand Knotted Woollen & Silk Rug

Hand Knotted · Wool & Silk · Feraghan Tradition · Master Crafted

Product Description

This Feraghan Hand Knotted Woollen and Silk Rug represents the very pinnacle of the rug-maker's art. Rooted in one of Persia's most celebrated regional traditions, the Feraghan style is defined by its exceptionally fine knotting, its characteristic all-over Herati pattern, and the precise, disciplined repeat of its botanical motifs — rendered here in a rare combination of premium wool and natural silk.

The silk pile adds a luminous quality that no wool-only rug can replicate — catching light differently at every angle, shifting subtly from rich depth to brilliant sheen as you move around the piece. The wool foundation provides warmth, resilience, and a softness underfoot that makes this rug as liveable as it is beautiful.

Each knot in this rug is tied entirely by hand — a process that requires months of patient, focused work by a master craftsman. The result is a piece of extraordinary density, precision, and longevity — a rug that does not merely decorate a room, but defines it.

Silk catches the light. Wool holds the warmth. Together, they make a rug unlike anything else in the world.

Design Story

"The Feraghan is not made — it is earned, knot by patient knot."

The Feraghan district of western Persia produced some of the finest rugs in the world during the 18th and 19th centuries — pieces so revered they were collected by European royalty and displayed in the great houses of the Ottoman Empire. What set Feraghan rugs apart was not merely their beauty, but their discipline: an all-over repeat of the Herati pattern — a fish and flower motif within a diamond lattice — executed with a fineness and consistency that demanded extraordinary skill.

Our artisans at Srijan Art Rugs have trained for years to master this tradition. Working on vertical looms, they tie each Persian knot individually — passing the yarn around two warp threads, pulling it tight, and cutting it to create the pile. Row by row, the pattern emerges: the central medallion, the guard borders, the all-over Herati field — each element exactly where it should be, with no room for error.

The addition of silk is our elevation of the Feraghan form — a material the tradition has always honoured for its ability to catch light and bring fine detail into vivid relief. Where the wool rests, the silk shimmers. The contrast between the two is not decorative — it is structural. It is how the pattern breathes.

When you place this rug in your home, you are placing centuries of craft at your feet. That is not a small thing. At Srijan Art Rugs, we do not take it lightly — and neither should you.

Care Instructions

Vacuum with Extreme Care

Use suction only — no beater bar, ever. Silk fibres are delicate and will fray under mechanical agitation. Vacuum lightly, in the direction of the pile, no more than once a week.

Blot Spills Immediately

Act fast — blot with a clean, dry white cloth. Never use coloured cloths on silk. Do not rub. For spot cleaning, use cold water only. Silk is highly sensitive to alkaline detergents and heat.

No Water, No Heat

Never wet-clean, steam, or machine wash a silk rug. Water causes silk to lose its sheen permanently. Heat will shrink the wool and damage the foundation. Dry cleaning solvents are also harmful.

Professional Clean Only

Deep cleaning must be done by a specialist experienced with hand knotted silk and wool rugs. This is non-negotiable. Incorrect cleaning will cause irreversible damage to both the silk pile and the colour.

Rotate Every 3 Months

Rotate 180° every 3 months to distribute light exposure and foot traffic evenly. Silk is particularly vulnerable to UV fading — avoid placing this rug in direct sunlight.

Store with Silk Care

Roll with pile inward, wrap in acid-free tissue paper first, then a breathable cotton sheet. Never use plastic — silk needs air circulation. Store flat if possible, in a cool, dark, dry space.
