Sphira Hand Knotted Woollen & Silk Rug
Hand Knotted · Wool & Silk · Signature Design · Handmade in India
Product Description
The Sphira Hand Knotted Woollen and Silk Rug takes its name from the ancient Greek word for sphere — and the name earns itself. The design is built around the geometry of the circle: spherical forms, radiating curves, and concentric patterns that draw the eye inward and hold it, creating a composition of rare visual depth and meditative calm. Hand knotted in a blend of premium wool and natural silk, the Sphira is a rug that rewards both looking and living with.
The two-fibre construction is at the heart of what makes this rug exceptional. The wool provides the body, the warmth, and the enduring softness underfoot that a rug meant for daily living requires. The silk — laid selectively along the curving forms of the spherical pattern — catches light along those arcs and radii, creating a subtle shimmer that makes the geometry appear almost three-dimensional. As you move around the piece, the lit areas shift. The spheres seem to turn. It is a quiet optical effect, but a genuinely beautiful one.
Design Story
The sphere is one of the oldest and most universal symbols in human culture — wholeness, completion, the perfection of a form with no beginning and no end. It appears in the sacred geometry of every major civilisation: in the mandalas of Indian temple art, in the roundels of Islamic geometric design, in the celestial diagrams of Persian astronomy, in the rose windows of medieval European cathedrals. Wherever human beings have tried to represent the idea of perfection, they have reached for the circle.
The Sphira design works within that tradition with full awareness of its weight. The composition is built from a central spherical medallion that radiates outward through a series of concentric arcs and geometric subdivisions — each circle containing within it smaller circles, each arc generating the next. It is a pattern with the quality of expansion: the more carefully you look at it, the larger it seems to become. This is the mark of genuinely considered geometric design — that it creates the impression of infinite depth on a finite surface.
The decision to knot this design in wool and silk together was made with the geometry in mind. The curving lines of a spherical composition need a material that can catch light along an arc — and silk does this better than any other fibre. The wool holds the ground steady and warm. The silk makes the curves glow. Together, they make the geometry visible in a way that neither material could achieve alone. At Srijan Art Rugs, we consider the Sphira one of the most technically and aesthetically resolved pieces in our collection.

Care Instructions
- Vacuum with suction only — no beater bar. Silk fibres are delicate and will lose their sheen under mechanical agitation. Vacuum lightly in the direction of the pile, no more than once a week.
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry, white cloth only. Never use coloured cloths on silk. Do not rub — always blot gently from the outside of the spill inward.
- Cold water only for any spot treatment. Silk is permanently damaged by warm or hot water. Never apply heat or steam of any kind.
- No household detergents or chemical cleaners on the silk areas. Use only pH-neutral, silk-safe products in very small amounts if necessary. Rinse thoroughly.
- Do not machine wash, soak, or tumble dry. The combination of silk and wool requires specialist care — neither fibre responds well to home wet-cleaning.
- Professional cleaning only for deep cleaning — use a specialist experienced with wool and silk mixed-pile hand knotted rugs. Recommended every 12–18 months.
- Protect from direct sunlight — silk is highly sensitive to UV fading. The curved silk elements of the Sphira design are particularly vulnerable to uneven fading. Rotate 180° every 3 months.
- Store rolled with pile inward, wrapped in breathable cotton cloth. Never fold. Keep in a cool, dark, dry, ventilated space away from moisture and pests.
