Dhara Hand Knotted Woollen & Silk Rug
Hand Knotted · Wool & Silk · Signature Design · Handmade in India
Product Description
The Dhara Hand Knotted Woollen and Silk Rug takes its name from the Sanskrit word for flow — the continuous, unbroken movement of water finding its path. That quality of movement is woven into every aspect of this rug: the design flows, the colours transition, and the silk elements catch the light the way a river surface does — in shifting, continuous motion that is never the same twice.
Hand knotted in a blend of premium wool and natural silk, the Dhara is a rug of both substance and subtlety. The wool provides the deep, grounded warmth and resilience that a rug meant for daily living demands. The silk — laid along the flowing lines of the design — brings a luminosity and a sense of movement that wool alone cannot achieve. Together, the two fibres create a surface that is rich without being heavy, calm without being flat, and beautiful in a way that deepens rather than diminishes with time.
Design Story
Dhara — flow, stream, current — is one of Sanskrit's most expressive words. It describes not just water moving, but the principle of continuous, unforced movement: the way a river does not push against its banks but finds, always, the path of least resistance. In Indian philosophy, dhara is associated with grace — the kind of movement that appears effortless because it is completely aligned with its own nature.
The Dhara rug design is built around that principle. The composition uses flowing, curvilinear forms — lines and shapes that suggest water, wind, and the movement of natural things — arranged across the field in a pattern that has no hard edges and no abrupt transitions. Everything in the design moves. Colours shift gradually from one tone to the next. Lines curve rather than break. The silk pile follows these curves, catching light along the arcs the way water catches light along its surface — in long, continuous gleams that travel across the rug as you move around it.
Our artisans approach the Dhara with the understanding that the hardest thing in design is making something look effortless. The flowing lines of this composition require more precision to knot than a geometric pattern — because the eye immediately notices when a curve is not quite right, in a way that it does not notice a slightly imperfect straight line. The Dhara is a technically demanding piece. The result of that demand is a rug that feels entirely natural — as though it could not have been made any other way.

Care Instructions
- Vacuum with suction only — no beater bar. Silk fibres are delicate and will lose their sheen permanently under mechanical agitation. Vacuum lightly in the direction of the pile, once a week at most.
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry, white cloth only. Never use coloured cloths on silk. Always blot — never rub — from the outside of the spill inward.
- Cold water only for any spot treatment. Silk is permanently damaged by warm or hot water. Never apply heat or steam of any kind to this rug.
- No household detergents or chemical cleaners — use only pH-neutral, silk-safe products in very small amounts if necessary. Rinse thoroughly to avoid residue build-up.
- Do not machine wash, soak, or tumble dry. The wool and silk combination requires specialist care — home wet-cleaning risks permanent damage to both fibres.
- Professional cleaning only for deep cleaning — use a specialist experienced with wool and silk mixed-pile hand knotted rugs. Recommended every 12–18 months.
- Protect from direct sunlight — silk is highly sensitive to UV fading. The flowing silk elements of the Dhara design are particularly vulnerable to uneven light exposure. Rotate 180° every 3 months.
- Store rolled with pile inward, wrapped in breathable cotton cloth. Never fold. Keep in a cool, dark, dry, ventilated space away from moisture and pests.
