Shearling Handloom Woollen Rug
Handloom Woven · Shearling Wool · Natural Texture · Warmth
Product Description
The Shearling Handloom Woollen Rug is a piece defined entirely by the quality of its material and the honesty of its making. Woven on a traditional handloom using shearling wool — wool taken from the first shearing of a young sheep, prized for its exceptional softness, its fine crimp, and its natural warmth — this rug offers a tactile experience that is genuinely different from any other wool rug. The moment you step onto it, or run your hand across the surface, the difference is immediate and unmistakable.
The handloom construction produces a rug with a natural, slightly irregular texture that no machine can replicate — a surface that has the quiet beauty of something made entirely by hand, where the weave is visible, the wool is present, and the craft is not hidden behind uniformity. The palette draws from the natural tones of undyed and lightly dyed shearling wool — warm creams, soft oatmeals, gentle greiges, and natural greys — colours that work with everything and age beautifully over time.
Design Story
There is a kind of design that works by restraint — by the decision not to add more, but to let the material speak for itself. The Shearling Handloom Woollen Rug is that kind of design. There is no pattern here in the conventional sense — no repeat motif, no geometric structure, no pictorial composition. The design is the wool, and the wool is the design.
Shearling is a word most associated with the soft, dense fleece of sheepskin garments — the kind of material that has been used for warmth in cold climates for thousands of years. The wool used in this rug carries that same quality: a softness and density that comes from the youth and fineness of the first shearing, a natural crimp that gives the rug its characteristic loft and resilience, and a warmth that is not merely physical but atmospheric — the kind of warmth that makes a room feel like somewhere you want to stay.
Our weavers work this wool on traditional handlooms — wooden structures that have not changed in their essential form for centuries, that require skill and physical engagement to operate, and that produce a cloth with a particular quality of life that power looms cannot approach. The irregularities in a handloom weave are not defects. They are the record of a human process, and they are what make the finished rug feel genuinely made rather than manufactured. At Srijan Art Rugs, we believe that is worth more than perfection.

Care Instructions
- Shake and air regularly — take outdoors and shake gently to remove dust and loose fibres. Air in the shade periodically. Shearling wool benefits from fresh air circulation to maintain its natural loft.
- Vacuum gently on low suction only, no beater bar. The handloom weave structure is open and can be disturbed by aggressive vacuuming. Go with the weave direction, not against it.
- Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth. Shearling wool has a natural lanolin content that provides some initial moisture resistance — but act quickly. Always blot, never rub.
- Spot clean with a wool-safe, lanolin-friendly detergent and cold water only. Avoid any product that strips lanolin — it is the wool's natural protection and contributes to the rug's softness and resilience.
- Do not machine wash, soak, tumble dry, or steam clean. Shearling wool is particularly sensitive to agitation and heat — both will cause felting, shrinkage, and permanent loss of the rug's characteristic softness.
- Lay flat to dry if the rug gets damp — in a shaded, well-ventilated space. Never hang a shearling wool rug to dry as the weight will stretch and distort the handloom weave structure.
- Professional cleaning recommended every 12–18 months by a specialist experienced with natural, undyed, and lightly dyed shearling wool textiles.
- Store rolled — never folded — in breathable cotton cloth. Shearling wool is particularly attractive to moths. Use natural cedar or lavender deterrents and check periodically in storage.
